I am a Senior Director with 16 years’ experience in qualitative strategy, specialising in consumer insight, behaviour change, and brand growth.The first time I was overlooked for a promotion, I was a 27-year-old junior market researcher. The colleague who got it wasn’t better than me — she was simply more confident and more visible. That moment taught me something I wish I’d learnt sooner: career growth isn’t only about working harder. It’s about building your brand with intention and making sure your impact is seen by the people who make decisions.Two years later when I moved into a mid-level role, my mentor said: ‘Speak up in meetings.’ Those words still ring true today. I never walk into a meeting without knowing the agenda or how I plan to add value. Sometimes my contribution is a simple question that shifts the room’s thinking; other times it’s reframing what I’ve heard to bring clarity. But I show up prepared and present.Corporate is a performance. I don’t make the rules, but we all have to learn how to play the game.
